What are allergies?

Allergies are hypersensitivities of the immune system to otherwise harmless substances. These trigger immune reactions in the body that can show up in different ways and often become noticeable on the skin.

These include atopic eczema, hay fever and food allergies. The most common signs of an allergic reaction are:

Redness
Rash
Itching
Eczema
Swelling
Coughing, shortness of breath, asthma, sneezing
Life-threatening allergic shock (anaphylaxis)

Allergy testing at “skin & aesthetic” in Frankfurt

Do you often suffer from allergic symptoms that affect your quality of life? We can help. Here is a short overview of the common allergy tests:

PRICK TEST

The prick test is carried out when an allergy to certain substances is suspected. We apply test solutions of the most common allergens to the forearm – such as common types of pollen, house dust mites, animal dander and mould spores. The skin at the test sites is then pricked superficially with a “prick needle” so that the solutions can pass the outermost layer of skin. After 15 to 20 minutes, we can see the strength and extent of the reactions from the wheals that have formed.

IC TEST (INTRACUTANEOUS TEST)

In this test, the test solutions are injected into the top layer of the skin, where – similar to the prick test – they trigger a reaction.

EPICUTANEOUS TEST / PROVOCATION TEST / PATCH TEST

The epicutaneous (patch) test is used to detect delayed allergic reactions, as in contact allergies. Unlike in hay fever, the immune system only reacts after several hours to days. This reaction is called a delayed-type or type IV allergy. The corresponding allergens are often found in cosmetics or costume jewellery. 

BLOOD TEST

The RAST test is used to determine how many allergy-related antibodies (IgE) are present in the blood. It is often used in addition to the other test methods to determine the degree of sensitisation and allergy.

TREATING ALLERGIES

Once we have identified the type of your allergy, we treat you in a targeted way.

Avoidance

Some allergies can be reduced or even avoided completely by staying away from the triggering substances. These might be certain materials, such as costume jewellery, or foods. If it is not possible to avoid the triggering substances, hyposensitisation is a good option.

Hypo-
sensitisation

Hyposensitisation is well suited to treating allergies in the long term. The aim is to get the immune system used to the allergy-triggering substances. To do this, the body is exposed to the allergen in a targeted way over several weeks, and the dose is increased with each treatment. As a result, the body gets used to the substance and the reaction becomes weaker.
