Fractionated laser technology is a particularly gentle method of laser therapy and it is used for both treating scars and firming the skin. This method stimulates the formation of collagen, creating a naturally fresh skin appearance in the process. The following types of scars can be particularly effectively treated by laser:
Atrophic scars (chicken pox, acne)
Atrophic scars have “sunken” into the skin. After the inflammation caused by acne or chicken pox has subsided, the tissue in the afflicted areas contracts together and sinks.
Hypertrophic scars
These often remain visible after skin injuries. These scars are caused by the over-production of connective tissue, causing the scar to grow above the level of the surrounding skin.
Keloids
Keloids are ridge-like scars that grow over and above the original area of the wound. These are benign tumours which can occur as a result of skin injuries or operations. Keloids are a source of great stress for patients as they are often very clearly visible.
